Roller Luggage

Flexibility, stability, style and strength — here’s our favorite tested and worthy roller luggage.

From the ground up

Here’s how we evaluate luggage for carry-on or check-in.

1

Capacity

Is it too big for carry-on? International sizes are different than US domestic. Know before you go.

2

Ease of Motion

4-wheel spinners move so smooth. 2-wheel luggage won’t roll away.

3

Durability

Doesn’t matter much that you got it for a good price if it breaks half way through the journey.

4

Style & Details

There’s nothing like a piece of luggage with personality made by thoughtful designers.

5

Personal opinion

Sometimes you’ve just got to make a decision for the one that speaks most to you.

“I’ve learned that you can tell a lot about a person by the way she handles these three things: a rainy day, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights.”

~ Maya Angelou

Nomatic Method. Literally fits more.
Solgaard's collapsible closet.
Sterling Pacific's inimitable lifetime warrior class spinner.

Start Here:

Elevated essentials with warranties and some nice details:
  • Nomatic Method… can actually fit a bit more than others, surprising but true. Also, expandable.
  • Aer Carry-on… same thing you’ll get anywhere, but this one has locks on the wheels; surprisingly useful.
  • Logel Cubo… surprisingly nice to pack with a zip-front panel and one large cavity to fill. Good warranty.
  • Eagle Creek… anything from Eagle Creek will last and work better than fine.
  • Solgaard… Super unique “collapsible closet” thing. Nice metal construction.
  • Shimoda Roller… a personal favorite. Doctor style opening. Two indestructible wheels. I’ve lived with this one for years.
  • Wandrd Transit… soft front, hard back, get some beautiful wear and tear on this thing, cuz it will get you into some memorable adventures.

Even Better:

Get some better materials, warranties and looks:
  • Briggs & Riley… a true road warrior’s best friend. These are praised by the best travelers I know. Epic expand/contract mechanism. I like the Global 21″ spinner.
  • DB Journey… the looks alone are worthy, but then the TSA clasps and metal frame make it last longer.

Only the best:

Take no prisoners, make no excuses, get the best of the best:
  • Sterling Pacific… lifetime warranty, epic construction, your kids will fight over it when you’re dead. This is heirloom stuff.
